Caye brought six new sewing machines to Your Sisters Orphanage in Tanzania and spent six weeks there in February and March, 2014, helping women develop a market for their product.
Your Sisters Orphanage in rural Tanzania was started in 2011 by Libby Bailey of Portland, OR, who says she “fell in love” with Tanzania”.
Libby has several projects underway to earn money for the orphanage, but the one that caught Caye’s attention was the Community Cultural Project in which local women created small bags for sale in the tourist market in Tanzania. Caye brought six electric machines, and taught both sewing techniques and machine maintenance.
The machines were bought with money donated by a lady in the Dundee area. Thread, needles and other supplies were donated by churches, senior centers, and friends including a large batch by John’s sister, Jean, at her church in Calgary.
The machines were bought at below cost from Boersma’s Sewing Center in Mc Minnville. Libby and her husband Frank each took one in their luggage and John and Caye took four in their suitcases. Another two machines were delivered by volunteers later in 2014.
