March-April 2011

Our trip to Egypt was an impulse buy. We read in a newspaper that the Egyptian tourist industry was suffering because of the recent revolution. All the news about the riots had scared visitors away. Tour companies and airlines were cutting prices drastically to lure them back. That was enough for us — a bargain price and a chance to see a revolutionary society up close.  Two weeks later we were on a plane to Cairo with twelve other people, as part of a tour organized by a small Seattle company.

We had a great time. All the Egyptians we met beamed at us, asked where we were from, and when we answered would shout “Obama!”. Our president has made a name for himself in Egypt.
