Much of India business is in the alternative economy: unregulated, informal, lively, but also impoverished, hand-to-mouth and driven by desperation. The only consistency is enormous variety. Someone would have a video store and make a comfortable living renting pirated movies. On the other hand, exhausted women would walk five miles with heavy bundles of wood to earn a single dollar.
